A Colourful Winter

Charging through the entrance of the Grand Palais to get a better look of Karl Lagerfeld’s magical transformation, never have a group of women been so delighted to walk into a supermarket! Guests walked up and down the aisles shrieking with excitement at everyday items that had been given the Chanel treatment. Coco Chanel Coco Pops, Jambon Cambon (the address of Chanel’ first boutique in Paris) and Confiture de Gabrielle (a tribute to the house’s founder). “The whole thing is related to pop art…because art has become a product, no?” said Karl; explaining his vision that there is no better way to showcase the Chanel product than in a supermarket. Karl has a unique grasp of how fashion is evolving. Some may say the clothes were lost in the theatrics but this was not a multi million-dollar tactic to disguise some below par designs. On the contrary, this was one of Lagerfeld’s most memorable collections yet…

Bubble gum pink moth eaten joggers made of woven knit jersey and a matching cropped sweatshirt, Delevigne strutted down the isles selecting a Chanel brandy bottle and sported a large feather duster. The cold temperatures of fridges and freezers were kept away, layering a classic Chanel tweed ankle length coat in the curvy volumes of the season (with emphatic rounded sleeves). Meanwhile, fellow model Stella Tennant went about her weekly shop carrying a shopping basket made with the familiar Chanel motif chain woven into the basket wire. Another model pushed a quilted, leather shopping trolley up and down the isles.

A rainbow of tweed coats were worn by the majority but the twist that Lagerfed put this A/W is that each coat has built in corseting revealing zips to tighten the bodice. The designer joked that too, these zips can be loosened when one has over indulged!

Elsewhere, wafer thin leather tracksuit joggers were partnered with sporty cropped jackets. All outfits were finalized with sneakers- some extending to boots.

Accessories with children’s candy bracelets and necklaces were remodelled into the double ‘C’ logo. Keeping the essence of the brand rows of pearls were thrown over models and the classic camellia flowers were laser cut from fabrics and attached to cable knit sweaters for embellishment.

Classic monochrome ensembles were given depth by layering silver wire, chain mail or padlocks. Ruffles, scalloping, dramatic shapes and use of multi coloured fabrics for jackets, and calf length skirts were shown, as well as wearing several leather items together at once. Velvets, feminine pink tweed suits, camel colours, red, burgundy, white, green, orange… the list goes on. Lagerfeld illustrates that fashion is a cycle, each trend returns and this season we are wearing it all.  Break boundaries and create your own colourful winter wardrobe with us here at Joel and Son.
