A Cape is regarded as any sleeveless outer garment. Almost like a poncho but it is usually a long piece of material covering the back and fastening around the neck. Historically, the Cape is remembered as the piece of clothing thrown over shoulders of boisterous midwives, men at war and part of a Scot’s Highland dress. However thanks to our favourite fashion designers, the Cape has been redefined and now being worn by all the cool girls! Think Little Red Riding Hood meets the uber-chic fashionista facing the chill of shady faces whilst sat on front row (not second, obviously…).
There is a lot to love about the Cape. You can use it to shield an evening dress where a coat with sleeves would crease, or to throw on with a shirt and ripped jeans (very this season). Whatever the outfit; you NEED one. The Cape is effortlessly stylish and so versatile.
Being the must have garment of the season, the Cape is one of the most talked about trends. You’ve probably heard or seen both high street and luxury Capes but here at Joel and Son you can create your very own and not risk seeing someone else in the same Cape as you (tragic faux-pas). This autumnal trend was all over the catwalks and we are particularly fond of Elie Saab, Chloe, Saint Laurent and Ralph Lauren.
This poppy red piece from Saint Laurent is ultra chic and perfect for a show stopping entrance to any winter event.

This lilac Ralph Lauren Cape is elegant and very luxurious; so much so, that you wont want to take it off! A muted hue suits almost every complexion… you can’t really go wrong… Check out our amazing selection of Cashmere here.
An ankle length Cape is always more dramatic (although harder to wear and always best with a high heel). Team with cigarette trousers or skinny jeans to keep your dimensions in check and remember; tailoring is key. Elie Saab does this length really well, please find his example below. This beetroot colour is SO beautiful.
Lastly, get inspired by Chloe’s waterfall cut Cape. The way that this garment falls is gorgeous and the waterfall technique can be recreated with most fabrics.
Although the colour is very fresh, this Cape would look fabulous in these options too! Please see our recommendations below:
