The MTV Video Music Awards were held last night, and as usual, the VMA red carpet was way funkier than anything we’ve seen at the stuffier, more formal awards shows this year. The Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Emmy’s, even the more creatively charged Grammy’s – they all call for more restraint, and, to put it bluntly, more dignity.

But all bets are off for the ‘party on dude’ vibe of the VMAs, and the stars have a lot more fun with their ensembles. Many things are whipped out for the occasion. Daring dresses. Controversial tattoos. Certain body parts.

This year, sparkles and skin – lots and lots of skin – seemed to be the memo. However, we think that there are good ways and bad ways to do shimmer and shine, and we spotted a few great gowns in the mix.

No-one can pull off flash like J-Lo. The cut of this floor length dress is quite simple, letting the glimmering fabric do the work.
We’re asking one of our couturiers to recreate J-Lo’s dress in a few colours, because it’s perfect for party season.
These are the lamé fabrics we’re using, but you can browse our lamé range for more options if you're keen on different colours. Silver Grey Metallic Silk Lamé / Ice Blue/Silver Metallic Chiffon Lamé
The lamé material on J-Lo’s dress is textured with some self pattern, so the chevron pattern on this gold one works well. 'Chevron' Gold Silk Lamé
Stepping away from the glitter for a moment was Nicky Hilton in her chic little Valentino mini. The white embroidered tulle dress with black trim is also perfect for cocktail season and you can recreate it with our spotted tulle and a lovely black trim.
