Joel & Son Fabrics is all in favour of keeping the fur faux. Here are five things you should know about this glam alternative to the real thing.

Wearing faux fur instead of real fur keeps your conscience clean. Animals suffering in the name of fashion isn’t ok and we’re so happy to see so many designers getting rid of genuine fur from their collections. There’s nothing fashionable about animal cruelty and these imitations look so good anyway. All we want to do is stroke these. Keep it faux!

Ever wondered what faux fur fabric is made of? It’s a man-made (obviously), pile fabric made of 100% polyester. Polymeric fibres are processed, dyed, and cut to match the colour and texture of a specific animal fur.

Can you wash it? Faux furs need the right care if you want them to last and look good. Don’t get them soaked, and dry clean them only. What happens when faux fur gets wet? Washing in water will disintegrate the fibres and make it look ratty.

Will a faux fur last as long as a real fur? Don't worry, you're not compromising your jacket/gilet/whatever's endurance by choosing faux. If you take care of them, quality faux furs are as durable as the genuine article and can last years and years, looking as fluffy as the day you got it.

Like for like, the weight of a faux fur is very close to the weight of the genuine fur it’s mimicking. So basically, you’ve got all the glamour of fur (which we agree is gorgeous), without the cruelty. Side note: real fur is very expensive. A decent faux that looks and feels great is not a cheap as chips, but it’s sooooo much more affordable than the real thing!
Kate Moss has switched to faux fur of late and we can't tell the difference at all - can you?!
