2019 Brides: Wedding Dress Trends You Need To Know

Whilst lace, appliques and beading remain bridal-wear staples year after year, the recent bridal couture runways are urging brides-to-be to embrace a host of new trends claiming a place in bridal fashion for 2019.  Statement bows, lashings of colour, elegant capes and shimmering metallics are just the beginning. Volume, volume, volume - fit for a princess.

 

 

Perhaps the spectre of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s May nuptials sparked it, but a princess bride theme seems to be back in a big way. Royal accoutrements like tiaras featured in many collections, and a number of big, full ballgown skirts swished down the catwalk. Many of the looks appeared inspired by iconic royal wedding dresses past, such as Grace Kelly’s. Simple, clean and minimal.

 

 

 

There’s a return to cleaner, more minimal looks with uncomplicated tailoring. Unembellished fabrics and sleek silhouettes with simple lines made an appearance in most of the designers 2019 shows, for an unfussy, elegant look that leaves room for an ornate hairdo or accessories if so desired.

Capes.

 

 

Capes have made a huge comeback, offering a dreamy, ethereal quality to the bride's look. Sheer, embroidered tulles and lace capes add a beautiful finishing touch that also works for practical requirements, such as the need to cover shoulders in religious contexts.

Long Trains.

 

Long trains are also back in vogue, trailing majestically behind the bride - another royal bride inspired accent.

Feature bows

 

Bows certainly aren’t revolutionary in bridal wear, but this time, instead of featuring subtley, bows are taking centre stage. Large statement bows are to be a focal point of the wedding dress, so make it over-sized and make it pop.

Colour.

 

 

 

Traditional bridal whites are being challenged by splashes of colour, daring brides to buck modern bridal conventions. Soft pastel tones showed up everywhere, from Jenny Packham to Hailey Paige and Leanne Marshall, and Vera Wang put her entire collection forward in colour, some muted and some bold. For the brave bride who wants to do bridal-gown-with-a-twist.

Metallics.

 

 

Brides who favour a bit of glitz can rejoice because disco wedding vibes were sprinkled through the collections. Wedding dress metallics are shining through as a glamorous alternative to the expected whites, creams and ivories.

Long, or full, sleeves.

 

 

Long sleeves have stayed put since Kate Middleton walked down the aisle in them in 2011. Lacy or translucent, fitted or flouncy gigot style, long sleeves are heavily featured in 2019 bridal-wear. It’s a nod to modesty as well as the plain fact that they look gorgeous when done right.

Necklines - deep plunge, turtleneck or boat neck.

 

 

 

What is going on with necklines in wedding dresses for 2019? Well, a massive trend is the deep plunge v-neck, often laid over with illusion fabric, for an incredibly sexy bridal look. Not for the shy bride! Elsewhere, boat necks are very in (now strengthened by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s wedding look), and turtle-necks have also appeared everywhere, in keeping with tones of modesty showing up throughout current bridal trends.

Jumpsuits.

 

Another option for brides wanting to veer slightly from tradition. Gorgeous bridal jumpsuits were everywhere, for either the main event or as an outfit change for a reception. Viktor & Rolf gave us a funky, shoulder-baring version, whilst other designers favoured a romantic, flowing option, or alluring creations in lace.

Heavy embellishments, 3d flowers.

 

 

Heavy embellishment reigns for 2019. Wedding dress designers are lavishing thick, oversized flowers and motifs on their creations for gorgeous, decadent texture.

Trapeze shape dresses.

Trapeze shape bridal gowns that drop out from an empire waist are on trend, providing an alternative for brides who’d rather not wear a dress that highlights the waist.
